happy birthday, baby…

By · On May 10 · Comments (5)

i’m feeling more emotional than i imagined i would as you turn one year old today, finn, and despite my efforts to be cheerful, i keep thinking back to where the two of us were on this day a year ago…maybe one day i’ll write our birth story out for others to see. for now, it still feels right to keep it fairly private, even though it was a moment of pride and pain that i enjoy remembering…

i’m happy that you’re growing up — i LOVE seeing you emerge from your ‘baby world’ day-by-day– creating your own games, noticing airplanes & trees & motorcycles…and walking. i love getting to know who you are. so the melancholy i feel doesn’t seem to be related to the loss of your babyhood…

instead, i find myself contemplating this year that’s gone by; the year that made me a mother. there will never be another year like it and, like birth, i feel a mixture of pain and pleasure at its passing. a fondness and relief that i have traversed this rite of motherhood, the first year of life… a nostalgia for its difficulties and a gratefulness to have made it through. a pride in the new woman who i am today. because i met you. they say our parents are our greatest teachers and i hope you will see that i truly endeavor daily to embody that for you.

but you have been the greatest teacher of my life, as well….
this was OUR year, my son.

happy birthday, baby.
the best is yet to come.
xoxo always,
your mama

Finn…
I enticed you to stay in place for this shot by plying you with yogurt melties — which held your interest for approximately 1.3 seconds before you took off in a dead sprint for the staircase (aka your current obsession). My oh my, do you have opinions about what you want to do and where you want to go! You love to hold onto an adult’s finger and set off in a frenzy for a set of stairs, or the dog food, or an open doorway. Getting you dressed in the morning is a serious challenge, and therefore you spend many days without a pair of pants or shoes (your nanny Mary has the magic touch of convincing you to get dressed — I seem to be lacking in that skill and I still have a lot to learn from her!).

Lately, I’ve been spending hours at night poring over the footage from your birth and its unbelievable to me what a journey we’ve been on as a family this year… I’ve become a different person. You’ve changed me forever. I’m wiser, more joyful, more cynical, more fearful, more free, more ambitious, more pure, more conflicted and more clear than I have ever been in my life. What beautiful turmoil children turn out to be… I am ever grateful for the lack of sleep, abundance of laughter, outpouring of friendship, confrontation of character, and pureness of love that you have brought into our lives.
I absolutely and forever adore you, my Finn.
xoxo

summer is on the way…

I had an invite last week to UsWeekly’s Hollywood Style party, and since the weather in LA has been so divine, I went super-summery with my look: a candy-striped dress by Shoshana, fuchsia lips and a classic ballerina bun.  Easy breezy…

happy hour with the hendershotts…

By · On Apr 19 · Comments (4)

My favorite photographers are offering a one-of-a-kind ‘happy hour’ deal in May — if you’re in Los Angeles and looking for some amazing headshots of you or your kids, these are the go-to photographers!!  I’ve shot with them more times than I can count, they’re the ones my management team rely on and they are such a lovely couple. They have only 4 spots left (check out the deal here and check out their blog here)…

I was a bridesmaid in Dessert Darling‘s wedding back in September, and today it was featured on that mecca of all wedding blogs, Style Me Pretty.  It is pink and glittery and wine-country fabulous — check it out HERE!

After seeing this pillow…

…in Kate Young’s house on The Glow, I purchased it from Etsy to do dual-duty in Finn’s room and as a decoration at his upcoming birthday party.  I think it’s awesome.  Oh, and I’ve decided that I want Kate Young to be my future stylist (when I can afford her).  How fabulous is she??

sunshine…

I love California.
Maybe it’s the onset of the rain today, but I’m feeling deeply appreciative of our typically beautiful sunny, golden-lit weather here in California. There’s just nothing like it.
We spent yesterday afternoon having cocktails on the deck with our fantastic neighbors — I feel so lucky not only that we know our neighbors, but they also happen to be wonderful guys who we really enjoy spending time with.
Thanks, Doug & Kalvin.

diamond gothic…

I recently had lunch with the super-sweet Bethany Joy Galeotti from One Tree Hill (and the fabulous blog, Wish You Were Here).  We chatted about all sorts of things (marriage, babies, life on a teen drama), and especially about her new series for HelloGiggles, “Diamond Gothic”.  It’s an evolving novel set in the 1920′s south, told in partnership with two other authors and you can read more about it HERE!  Check it out, because this girl is fabulous, chic, and TALENTED!

happy easter…

cute little bunny rabbit in the desert near palm springs

I love springtime and although I’m not religious, I take the Easter holiday as an opportunity to celebrate and give thanks for good weather and all the new signs of life. My favorite sign of spring this year has to be the new baby chicks that my mom and dad have welcomed into their household!! Finn got to ‘meet’ them a couple weeks ago and this weekend we’re planning to spend more time checking them out, attempting an egg hunt, and dyeing eggs (I really want to glitter them like the cover of Martha Stewart mag!)…

finn is already into chicks

Finn’s too young to really search for an Easter basket, but I did get him a little spring-themed treat that he can enjoy:

I wish you all a wonderful holiday weekend!!!
